An extraordinarily beautiful and pleasant sandbox game. The visual style took me some time to adjust to, but once I got used to it I found it to be perhaps one of my favorite video game aesthetics of all time. It's exhilarating to explore all sorts of different planets and structures, and the creative tools the game gives for building your own are extraordinary. I adore the diversity of prefabricated structures, which makes exploring the procedurally generated universe all the more tantalizing.
The narritive is too juvenile even for my tastes in generally juvenile stories. The action elements of the game also leave something to be desired, although it can be exciting in rare circumstances when the player power levels line up just right with the environment (typically, it is easy to dramatically over-equip for different locations).
Another very important strength of starbound is the rich modding support and highly active community of content creators. I strongly recommend engaging with this plethora of innovation, which transforms the game into a brand new experience altogether dripping with exciting things to explore.
