Objects in Space is definitely a slow burner, but it generates one of the most masterfully crafted video game environments I've ever had the pleasure of experiencing. I get excited just thinking about this game and the careful, detailed work that went into capitalizing on the full potential of the "modem-punk" theme. A combination of careful audio design, creative gameplay-story interaction, emotional pacing, and the best space sci-fi/fantasy setting I've ever seen come together to create a deep, permeating aesthetic so horribly lost in the plethora of terrible space sandboxes.
Objects in Space is extremely unique, taking a very niche core concept and executing it in the best way possible. The metrics by which it must be evaluated, therefore, are slightly skewed in a more artsy direction than a raw entertainment value one; that's no excuse for a kind of repetitive and loose core gameplay loop, but the artistic value of the game is more than enough to make up for it. I might also get irked by this a little more than average because of my goldfish attention span and refusal to use the "time compression" (game speed up) feature.
From a technical standpoint, the game is very clearly low-budget, but the total amount of content, quality of story, and technical execution all indicate great care and thoughtful design.
I would highly recommend this game to anybody and everybody the core idea remotely appeals to. Even though a niche is a niche, such a masterful execution deserves far broader attention paid than usual.
