Apex Legends is fun in many ways; unlike most first person shooters, the time-to-kill is very high, which makes it much more accessible to newcomers to the genre and less frustrating to play in general. I feel like this is a key innovation that should persist into other games as well, as this has worked out extremely well. I also adore the character designs and environments, which are very pretty. I only play the 3v3 mode, which I find much more fun than Battle Royale (except when I have to play the latter for other reasons, discussed later).
That being said, it's not amazing. The only reasons I play this are to socialize with my friends, because it's so popular as to be a solid common-ground multiplayer game, and because I'm addicted. The battle pass system and limited FOMO style collectibles have their hooks in me deep. The game is designed with all sorts of tricks to be habit forming, and most of the time I play it's because of those hooks that I'm launching it; not because I am eager to play the game for its quality as a shooter, although those times do come and go. It's become a massive time-vampire for me, and I usually feel bad after playing; but of course, I'll come back the next day, because I'm a sucker for the once-in-a-lifetime chance at some silly weapon skin or character voice line.
I strongly recommend avoiding this, especially if you have an addiction-prone personality. That being said, it's probably alright if you go into it mindfully, if you have a friend nagging you to play it.
