Age of Empires 2 is a very fun game to watch, okay to play. Good real time strategies are a dying genre, so far as my experience goes, but the AoEII scene serves as a sort of last bastion for the genre, still receiving balance patches and occasional modernization (despite the protests of some stubborn veterans) that make it stand up as a good game in 2021. I have not played the singleplayer campaigns, although from what I've seen they don't seem interesting.
The developers seem to be pushing towards a new gamemode that cuts out the most boring part of the game- the first 10 minutes which always play out roughly the same. This has received a lot of pushback from the community, but if they go through with it I might even pick it back up, since that boring period is the main thing keeping me away from it now with my very busy schedule.
