A long series of disappointments. The book did a fair job of evoking some viscerally emotional scenes, but beyond that, there was not a lot of substance to the story nor the quality of English. I think that the enjoyment value of these isolated scenes are overshadowed by many of the larger concerns I had about the book. Firstly, the portrayal of mental health and obsessive compulsive disorder was grossly unrealistic and destructive, making me wonder about the extent to which the author did their research. At first I was excited to read about a character who had that kind of struggle, especially in the context of germs, but I ended up feeling very let down by how poorly that struggle was portrayed. Secondly, I could not stand the sympathetic portrayal of the overwhelmingly wealthy, never mind the main sad rich kid's repeated ignorance of the concept of consent. It seemed like John Green truly believed at the time of writing that when a woman says no that they mean yes. (view spoiler) Overall, this is best avoided by new and experienced readers alike.
