Flowers for Algernon was an absolutely extraordinary read which prodded at science fiction in a way I had never seen before. Sure, Daniel Keyes was a little bit a product of his time and could be frustrating occasionally, but for the most part he was very conscientious, doing a better job of writing about a lot of sensitive and confusing topics than you ever see addressed in even abstract ways today.
The book was very raw and emotionally visceral in a lot of segments, and although it was sort of overbearing at times it made the experience overall very engaging. (view spoiler)
Overall, this ended up being one of the most gratifying reads I've had the pleasure of considering for a long time, and it filled a niche I feel as if I had been searching for over the course of many years. This was such a unique experience that I would easily recommend Flowers for Algernon under the majority of circumstances.
