The Culture series is pretty interesting overall, but it starts off weak. The quality of the prose is overall pretty bad and although there are a lot of fantastic and interesting setting elements to the story, the characters are mostly pretty bland. Feel free to jump around throughout the Culture series looking for better stories, particularly as Iain Banks developed as an author later into his career. They're all reasonably standalone.
