Agency vs. Replayability

Some well-made games (e.g. Stardew Valley) invest heavily in manually adding content to enhance the illusion of player agency (or “reactivity”). Romance routes, story endings, strategies, terrain generation presets… I can’t speak to whether this is a good investment (many of my friends actively dislike when visual novels give them choices), but I can’t help but notice that this investment seems to have an inexorable side effect of causing people to re-play the game in absolute droves to “experience all the content”, even when most of the game is moment-per-moment identical. That’s a strikingly depressing state of affairs!
