Navier-Stokes

Turns out I already solved Navier-Stokes and didn’t even realize? Shared the solution + lean proof last month for a video game project. My blog doesn’t get traction so I guess nobody noticed?

Sucks to be cheated out of the $1,000,000! I didn’t even know.

Who's Arguing for Flock?

While Flock is a tool that can be audited, there is nothing to stop a corrupt officer simply following a car when they don’t like the look of its driver, or writing down plates of vehicles spotted outside an ex-girlfriend’s house – they would just be harder to catch.

Ned Donovan, a journalist turned police reporter, wrote an excellent defense of flock Security cameras: https://worksinprogress.co/issue/a-cops-case-for-flock/. It combined some ironclad statistics about camera abuse and efficacy, and some anecdotes to explain what those numbers looked like in practice.

The backlash to this article on Twitter was predictably ugly. So who was this piece for?

Rapid prototyping is cool

I hit a really interesting design epiphany while working on Space Trucking (one of Cor’s dream games). I had been working in a very conventional way concerning progression: It’s fun to start out with very few things, and then gradually work up to many things!

Moloch CSS Gen

Ugh, I’m torn. I generated some CSS for Moloch, because I wanted it to look like a newspaper- color, font, that sort of thing, you know?

But the generator took the liberty of adding way more than I bargained for, and I… Don’t know what to do? I mean, it looks good; better than anything I could have written. I mean, obviously I wanted to de-slop it a little bit, but it was good enough for me…

VRChat Development Stack: August 2026

It’s been a crazy year so far. Technology has moved so fast in every way of life, both inside and outside the context of VRChat content creation. Me, personally? I’m at a unique point in my life where I’m used to adapting to new, hostile development environments (I have to wrap around the MathWorks ecosystem, for goodness sake), and I’m now better equipped to tackle the challenges that come with that. Well… Maybe “better equipped” isn’t the right term, but I’m certainly more opinionated! And now, I’m going to apply that knowledge to try to come up with the most idiomatic VRChat development process ever!

Agency vs. Replayability

Some well-made games (e.g. Stardew Valley) invest heavily in manually adding content to enhance the illusion of player agency (or “reactivity”). Romance routes, story endings, strategies, terrain generation presets… I can’t speak to whether this is a good investment (many of my friends actively dislike when visual novels give them choices), but I can’t help but notice that this investment seems to have an inexorable side effect of causing people to re-play the game in absolute droves to “experience all the content”, even when most of the game is moment-per-moment identical. That’s a strikingly depressing state of affairs!

Social Agents

AI agents are quite good at technical work, but obviously, they struggle at social tasks. They’re no good at creative writing (in fact, I’d go so far as to say they’re awful at it)… But I dunno, I would be willing to bet a non-negligible part of that is due to the fact that a big chunk of the money in AI research goes towards more profitable areas (like coding). Similarly, I bet a bunch of the people who do want it to be good at creative writing just… Don’t care. Like, do you mean to tell me the army of people on Replika-slop apps care about whether they’re using the best technological service available? Or are they just falling for some crazy predatory business practices gated behind a company who only really cares about the value they can extract from that demographic more than any degree of artistic excellence (I think working on FOSS creative stuff has the side benefit of providing people with alternatives to the awful, predatory AI companionship apps on the app-store. Right now, the target audience of those apps is 100% being preyed on and I want to help shred their moat to smithereens.)? Anyway, my point is, it doesn’t have to be this way.

AI and Learning

Say what you will about AI rotting our brains, but there is no world in which it would have been worth the return on investment to learn jujutsu otherwise. Even if AI were taken away from me right now, I’d be so much more of an efficient and effective developer than I would have been in a world where I couldn’t spare the time to learn these new skills.

Life is amazing right now. I can read so many books and technical blogs and practice all kinds of new skills! The fact that I’m even practicing writing at all is in large part thanks to AI taking the tedious implementation and QA tasks off my shoulders in my personal projects! I feel like I’m not even living in the same world as the people who say it’s making them less smart (though I’m sure those people would say I’m just imagining all the learning I’m doing due to AI psychosis, or whatever).

CLI Legibility

Old, popular software isn’t sacred. The more I learn about technology, the more obvious that becomes. Now, I didn’t always think that way; I used to be very trusting. But now, I’m fairly convinced anybody who evangelizes anything is more often full of hot air than not.

I’ve been extremely frustrated lately about CLI design, particularly the fact that nobody seems capable of even imagining better. There’s like, a million low-hanging fruit design principles you could follow while making decisions, but nobody ever does. Things are just arbitrary.

Misinformation is bad! Please do not spread misinformation on the internet! I think we all know this is important and could do with checking our sources more often. The bigger your audience, the more important such diligence becomes.

In particular, I really want to drive home is “how do we think scientifically”. I know we went over the scientific method in school, but here’s a bit of a refresher.

How I Like to Buy Commissions

I just read a post that awoke me like a sleeper agent hearing their activation phrase and wrote wayyyy too much, so I’m just going to dump it here instead of clogging it with an essay. That’s not going to stop me from being a huge pretentious twat on the internet, but I’ll yap about it here instead, at least.

Rudolphing

One strategy that’s worked really well for me, being queer, is to stick to environments where I’m overqualified: Even if you’re an average fish, in a small pond, you look like a big one. This works as an excellent shield: Though I do have coworkers who come from backgrounds where being queer was not only socially reprehensible but a literal crime, what are they going to do about me? I do so much complex technical work that I just can’t be replaced for the wages the company’s hiring at, while they’re constantly humiliating themselves by failing at their most trivial responsibilities. I simply out-leverage them when push comes to shove (unless they try to kill me, which is a whole separate can of worms but unlikely in my circumstance).

Mythology Aesthetics

I’m really happy that Age of Mythology: Retold was received so positively. Genuinely, that game was a huge part of my childhood. These sorts of games are plagued by rancid cash-grabby re-releases that never really go anywhere, so I was surprised that AoM: Retold is picking up a bit of steam. Granted, I don’t really expect to play it, other than maybe once or twice with my little brother as a nostalgia thing…

Pathologic is the Best Video Game Ever

I love Pathologic so, so friggin’ much. I’ve given it a month to sit, after starting the game half a year ago, and it remains firmly my “best video game of all time”, beating out Outer Wilds, Darkwood, and Pacific Drive.

It was crunchy and tense. It tore right to the soft, vulnerable parts of my heart and lay them bare. I was thrown through a profound range of passionate and horrifying emotions, facing one of my lifelong phobias head on. It was spectacularly constructed, refracting inwards on itself in emergent scintillation. I felt and feel driven by its impact in a way media just doesn’t easily get to each other. I have the highest respect for Ice-Pick Lodge, as they seem to have for us.

I heard a lot of complaints that the game was too hard, but I dunno about that. The game succeed at its overwhelming impression of brutality, so much so that it can be utterly overwhelming. Fact of the matter is though, as a game so thoroughly infatuated with dis-empowerment, it makes the hellfire very entertaining. It’s not just practically difficult, either- it’s emotionally intense. It’s beautiful, it’s moody, and it was a downright threat to my way of life simply by virtue of being. Oh, and, uh… The game is finished. Being forced to play the original with minor variations thrice in a row was not exactly an asset, and they’ve done a good job consolidating the themes and ideas under the Haruspex*. Oh, and on top of that! The Haruspex’s life is not only thrice as compelling as before, it’s worth more than the sum of its parts! Rashomon is old news, anyway.

Hell, I’ve even incorporated some steppe language into my speech, making me somehow even more of a pretentious twat than I already am.

Play the remake, Pathologic 2, not the original or remaster. HBomb’s advice to skip the original and play the remake is on point**.

Surrounded by Beauty

My brain is a peanut rattling around in a vacuous bone cage. I wasn’t built to process the beauty I’m constantly inundated with.

This is an incredible blessing, but it’s one I’ve developed almost no ability to appreciate. For one, it’s a sea where principally systems devoid of beauty organize beauty. And I’m no navigator. For another, as a rational actor, this beauty is fundamentally irrelevant to my day to day- I have not discovered a way to leverage this beauty in any capacity.
